Meiosis (process/cycle) Flashcards
What is the purpose of MEIOSIS?
To create a GAMETE for SEXUAL reproduction
What cells undergo MEIOSIS?
GERM cells (found in testes/ovaries)
What event occurs in PROPHASE 1?
Synapsis (forming of a tetrad)
What is the purpose of SYNAPSIS?
To form a tetrad for the purpose of crossing-over of genes
How to genes swap during crossing-over?
Independant assortment (2^haploid = # of outcomes)
What is the difference between METAPHASE 1 vs METAPHASE 2?
1: Tetrads align on central axis side by side
2: Chromatids align on central axis single-file
How many chromosomes are in each cell at the end of MEIOSIS 1?
23 sister chromatids (no homologous pairs)
How many cells are formed at the end of MEIOSIS 1?
Two daughter cells
How many chromosomes are in each cell at the end of MEIOSIS 2?
23 SINGULAR chromosomes
How many cells are formed at the end of MEIOSIS 2?
Four daughter cells
