Mitosis Flashcards
What are the general features of cell reproduction?
Reproductive signal
Replication of DNA
Segregation of DNA
Cytokinesis
What are the phases of the cell cycle?
G1- Growth phase 1
S- Synthesis phase
G2- Growth phase 2
M- Mitotic phase
What occurs during G1?
Growth and normal metabolic roles.
Has the G1/S checkpoint
What occurs during S phase?
DNA replication
What occurs during G2?
Growth and preparation for mitosis.
Has the G2/M checkpoint
Functions of mitosis
Asexual reproduction
Growth and development
Tissue renewal and repair
How does S phase prepare the cell for mitosis?
Chromosomes are duplicated but remain as chromatin
Describe prophase
Chromosomes condense and each duplicated chromosome is made of two sister chromatids.
The mitotic spindle forms.
The centrosomes move away as they are pushed by microtubules.
Describe prometaphase
The nuclear envelope fragments
The microtubules stick to chromosomes
The microtubules stick to kinetochores :. the chromosomes move
Other microtubules push each other away
Describe metaphase
Chromosomes move to imaginary metaphase plate
Centromeres of sister chromatids straddle the meta phase plate
Describe anaphase
Chromatids separate into separate chromosomes
New chromosomes migrate to the poles of the cell
The cell becomes egg shaped
Describe telophase
Two identical sets of chromosomes are at the poles
The chromosomes begin to uncoil
Two nuclear envelopes form
Cytokinesis begins where microfilaments act like draw strings on a bag
