Mendellian Genetics Flashcards
What is blending theory?
Father’s info blends with mother’s and is mixed and forever changed.
What is particulate theory?
Each determinant has a distinct physical nature and will remain intact after fertilization and can be passed on.
Advantages of using peas?
Easy controlled fertilization
Discrete well defined traits
Pure breeding strains
Each plan produces many seeds in pods
Monohybrid cross of heterozygous peas produces what ratio?
3:1 of dominant traits to recessive
Law of segregation
2 alleles for each trait segregate during gametes formation then unite at random at fertilization
Dihybrid cross of heterozygous peas with two different traits ratio?
9:3:3:1
Law of independent assortment
During gamete formation different pairs of alleles segregate/assortment independently of each other
When does the law of independent assortment not apply?
When genes are linked on the same chromosome
