Mitosis Flashcards
What are the two types of cells?
Body cells and sex cells
What are the only two cells that are NOT body cells?
sperm and egg
Why are some cells constantly being made through mitosis?
For repair, growth, or replacement
What two things can a stem cell do?
Become a specialized cell OR go through cell division
What is the longest phase of mitosis?
interphase
What is a cell doing during interphase?
growing and developing
What cells are no longer resulting from mitosis?
nerve and muscle cells
What is the cell division that results in body cells?
mitosis
What are the structures that contain the hereditary material?
chromosomes
What is being copied during interphase?
Hereditary material, genetic information, or DNA
What are the results of mitosis?
- two new daughter cells identical to the original cell
- each new nucleus has the same type and number of chromosomes as the original
- the original cell no longer exists
What is a cell that is not yet specialized?
stem cell
