Mitosis Flashcards
Mitosis:
Occurs in all multi-celled eukaryotes
What occurs during Interphase? (3 points)
- Cell mass increases
- Cytoplasmic components roughly double
- DNA is duplicated
What happens during early prophase?
DNA begins to condense
What happens during late prophase? (2 points)
- Nuclear envelope starts to breakup
- One pair of duplicated centrioles starts moving to the opposite end of cell
What are the different cell cycles of Interphase?
- G1, Interval
- S “Synthesis”
- G2, Second Interval
What is the longest portion of the cell cycle? (For most cells)
Interphase
What are the 3 steps of Mitosis?
- Increased size of body during growth
- Replacement of dead or worn-out cells
- Repair of damaged tissues
What occurs during cell cycle G1?
Cell growth & functioning (INTERPHASE)
What occurs during cell cycle S? (Synthesis)
DNA replication (INTERPHASE)
What occurs during cell cycle G2?
Preparation for division (INTERPHASE)
What occurs during Prometaphase?
- Nuclear envelope is gone
- Interactions between microtubules & chromosomes
What occurs during Metaphase?
- All chromosomes are lined up at the spindle equator
* Chromosomes are most tightly condensed at this stage
What occurs during Anaphase?
Sister chromatids break apart & start moving to opposite ends of cell
What occurs during Telophase? (3 points)
- 2 clusters of chromosomes arrive at opposite spindle poles
- Chromosomes become thread-like again **
- Nuclear envelope reforms
What occurs during Cytokinesis?
- Division of cytoplasm
- Cells pinch inwards & are separated by the formation of cell plates/cleavage furrows
Cell plates = Plants
Cleavage furrows = Animals
