Mitosis Flashcards
1
Q
What is mitosis?
A
The division of body cells to produce new cells
2
Q
What does each new cell have?
A
- Identical sets of chromosomes
- The same number of chromosomes as the parent cell
- The same genes as the parent cell
3
Q
When/Why does mitosis occur?
A
- For growth
- For repair
- To replace old tissue
4
Q
What has to be enabled before mitosis takes place?
A
Cells go through a cycle of growth and then division.
5
Q
How many times is this repeated?
A
Until the cell can no longer divide
6
Q
What happens when a cell enter the growth phase of the cycle?
A
- The number of organelles increase
- The chromosomes are copied - the two strands of each DNA molecule separate and new strands form alongside them
7
Q
What happens when a cell enter the division phase of the cycle?
A
- The copies of the chromosomes separate
- The cell divide
