Mitosis Flashcards
What are other cells that rarely or never divide?
Brain cell, spinal cord cell, cardiac cell
What are examples of cells that are constantly dividing?
Cells in the embryo, skin cells, gut lining cells, etc.
A body cell; a cell whose genes will not be passed on to future generations (Ex. Skin cell)
Somatic cell
A cell that is destined to becomes a gamete (egg or sperm); a cell whose genes can be passed on to future generations
Sex or germ cell
A cell with 2 sets of chromosomes in each of its cells; all body (somatic) cells
Diploid (2N)
A cell with 1 set of chromosomes in each of its cells; all gametes (sperm, eggs)
Haploid (N)
Division of somatic cells
Mitosis
Creation of new sex cells
Meiosis
What does a typical cell go through during the cell cycle?
Growth, development, and reproduction
What is the longest phase in the cell cycle?
Interphase
What’re the 3 stages of interphase?
G1, S, G2
What happens during stage G1?
The cell grows and performs its normal function
What is the S phase?
“Synthesis”; when DNA is replicated
What happens during G2?
DNA replication is checked and the cell is getting ready to divide.
What happens during mitosis?
The nucleus of the cell divides, forming two nuclei with identical genetic information
