Mitosis Flashcards
Define mitosis
Type of nuclear division that maintains the chromosomes number; each new daughter cell contains the same genetic information as the parent cell. They are also genetically identical to each other.
What is Asexual reproduction?
Involves one parent and produces offspring that are genetically identical to each other and to the parent.
Stages of mitosis
Prophase
Metaphase
Anaphase
Telophase
Events during prophase
Chromosomes condense.
Centrioles split and move to opposite sides of the cell, forming spindle.
Nuclear envelope breaks down
Events during metaphase
Nuclear envelope gone.
Spindle fibres attach to the centromeres of each chromosome.
Chromosomes line up at the equator.
Events in anaphase
The chromosomes break apart at the centromere.
Motor proteins pull each sister chromatid of each pair towards opposite poles.
Events in telophase
Separated chromosomes reach the poles.
A new nuclear envelope forms around each set of chromosomes.
Cel now contains two nuclei each genetically identical to each other and to the parent cell.
Events of cytokinesis
Cell will completely divide into two daughter cells (cytoplasm + cell membrane separates).
Each daughter cell will be identical to each other and their parent cell.
