Mitosis Flashcards
What are the 5 steps of mitosis?
P.P.M.A.T
1. Prophase
2. Prometaphase
3. Metaphase
4. Anaphase
5. Telophase
What happens in prophase of mitosis?
• the spindle starts developing
• chromosomes condense by condensins that bind to the DNA
• two chromatids comprise each chromosome
• the mitotic spindle forms
What happens in Prometaphase of mitosis.
• The nuclear membrane disintegrates
• spindle microtubules attach to kinetochore at the centromere of the chromatid pair
What happens in metaphase of mitosis?
• The chromosomes line up on the metaphase plate (center of cell)
What happens in anaphase of mitosis?
• sister chromatids separate
• move towards opposite poles and become individual chromosomes
What happens in telophase of mitosis?
• chromosomes arrive at spindle poles
• the nuclear membrane re-forms and the chromosomes relax
What are the products of mitosis?
• Two cells that are genetically identical to each other
• each new cell contains 1/2 the cytoplasm and organelle content of the original parent cell
