A
oogonia undergoes rounds of mitosis in the ovaries
They are diploid

A
the oogonia enter prophase 1 and become primary oocytes

each primary oocyte completes meiosis 1
• produces a large secondary oocyte (1n)
• produces a smaller polar body, which disintegrates
