Cell Cycle Flashcards
What are the steps to the cell cycle?
- G1
- (G0) - G1/S phase
- S phase
- G2
- G2/M checkpoint
- M phase (mitosis)
What are the purpose of cell cycle checkpoints?
Allow or prohibit the cells progression to the next stage
What are the steps in interphase?
G1, S, G2
What happens during G1?
• Cell grows
• proteins necessary for cell division are synthesized
What happens during G1/S checkpoint?
Holds cells until has all enzymes and proteins necessary for replication of
DNA
AFTER: the cell is commited to divide
What happens during S phase?
DNA SYNTHESIS (DNA is replicated)
• each chromo is duplicated
RESULTS: each chromosome is composed of two sister chromatids
What happens during G2?
Biochemical preparation for cell division
What happens in the G2/M checkpoint?
Assures that DNA is completely replicated and undamaged
*IF PASSED: cell is ready to divide and enter M Phase.
What is the M phase?
Period of active cell division. Includes MITOSIS and cytokinesis
What is cytokinesis?
Cytoplasmic division
What happens in mitosis?
Sister chromatids separate in 5 steps.
