Mitosis Flashcards
Mitosis Definition
the process by which eukaryotic cell division occurs, a mother cell forms two daughter cells
What happens to organelles and cytoplasmic components during mitosis?
they are replicated during G1-G2
Gā phase
the phase at which a cell exists outside of its reproductive cycle
M phase
Mitosis
Interphase
G1, S, and G2
G phases
growth phases
S phase
DNA synthesis
Is a zygote diploid or haploid?
diploid
Are gametes diploid or haploid?
haploid
4 Phases of Mitosis
Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, and Telophase
Prophase
condensation of DNA after replication, chromatids join at centromeres, and the nuclear envelope disassociates
Homologous Chromosomes
same chromosome (two chromatids) from mom and dad, same genes different alleles
Sister Chromatids
identically replicated chromosomes, same genes same alleles
Prometaphase
the nuclear envelope is completely removed
Metaphase
the longest stage in which chromosomes line up along the metaphase plate and spindle fibers attach to the kinetochores
Kinetochore
two attached centromeres
Anaphase
The fibers separate the chromatids into single chromosomes, dissolving the kinetochore
Telophase
chromosomes pulled to opposite poles, decondense and form a two new, identical nuclei
Cytokenesis
division of the cytoplasm which occurs after mitosis
Karyokinesis
division of chromosomes; the process of mitosis and is completed once two nuclei are formed
