Mitosis Flashcards
what are karyotypes
the number and visual appearance of the chromosomes in the cell nuclei of an organism or species.
what do multicellular organisms depend on cell division for
- development from a fertilized cell
- growth to adult
- repair
describe what duplicated chromosomes are
- are 2 sister chromatids, which later sperate
what are the 5 phases of mitosis
- prophase
- prometaphase
- metaphase
- anaphase
- telophase
what is produced through mitosis
- produces 2 genetically identical identical daughter cells
describe what happens in Prophase
- is the first phase of mitosis,
- centrioles move to opposite poles
- chromosomes become visible
describe what happens in Prometaphase
-the nuclear envelope breaks down (in many but not all eukaryotes) and the chromosomes attach to the mitotic spindle
describe what happens in Metaphase
- chromosomes are lined up at the metaphase plate
- each sister chromatid is attaches to a spindle fiber originating from opposite poles
describe what happens in anaphase
- Centromeres split into 2
- sister chromatids are pulled towards opposite piles
describe what happens in telophase and cytokinesis
- chromosomes arrive at opposite poles and begin to decondense
- nuclear envelope material surrounds each set of chromosomes
- the mitotic spindle breaks down
spindle fibers continues to push poles apart
