Mitosis Flashcards
What are the 4 stages of mitosis
- Prophase
- metaphase
- anaphase
- telophase
What part of the cell cycle is mitosis
Cell division
Describe what happens at stage 1 of mitosis
Prophase
- chromosomes condense and are therefore visible
- centrioles move to opposite poles and create spindle fibres which develop int the spindle apparatus
- the nuclear envelope breaks down and the nucleolus disappears
What happens at stage 2 of mitosis
Metaphase
- chromosomes align along the equator
-spindle fibres relied from each pole attach to each sister chromatids
What happens a stage 3 of mitosis
Anaphase
- spindle fibres retract and pull sister chromatids to opposite poles
- this causes centromere to divide into 2
- chromatids are pulled to opposite poles
- requires ATP
What is stage 4 of mitosis
Telophase
- chromosomes reach the poles
- nucleus reforms
- spindle fibres disintegrate
What is the mitotic index
% of cells undergoing mitosis
What is the word equation for mitotic index
Mitotic index = the number of cells in mitosis / the total number of cells x 100
