Mission Planning Module Flashcards
What are the 5 Army Planning Methodologies?
- Army Design Methodology (ADM)
- Military Decision Making Process (MDMP)
- Troop Leading Procedures (TLPs)
- Rapid Decision-Making and Synchronization Process (RDSP)
- Army Problem Solving
Define Army Design Methodology (ADM)
a methodology for applying critical and creative thinking to understand, visualize, and describe problems and approaches to solving them.
Used for COMPLEX problems at TSOC level or higher
Doesn’t necessarily solve the problem, develops approaches
Define the 4 Elements of ADM
(think of the graphic)
1. Frame the Operational Environment (current and desired end-states)
2.Frame the Problem (what obstacles are preventing us from getting to the desired end-state)
3. Develop an Operational Approach (broad actions to solve the problem, Lines of Effort, Lines of Operations)
4. Develop the Plan (MDMP)
Define the Military Decision Making Process (MDMP)
planning methodology to understand the situation and mission; develop, analyze, and compare courses of action; and produce an operations plan or order
What does MDMP facilitate and provide?
- Facilitates collective planning
- integrates activities and of the commander, staff, subordinate HQs to understand the situation and mission
- Translate broad operational approach into a complete and practical plan to accomplish the mission
Define Troop Leading Procedures
A dynamic process used by small-unit leaders to analyze a mission, develop a plan, and prepare for an operation. Enables leaders to maximize available planning time while developing effective plans
Define Rapid Decision-Making and Synchronization Process (RDSP)
RDSP seeks a timely and effective solution within the commander’s intent by combining experience and intuition to quickly reach situational understanding
Define the Army Problem Solving Process
- used for non-combat operations, similar to MDMP
- can aid in understanding the operational problem as described in MDMP, or TLP, or used as a separate process to understand and solve problems
What is the purpose of mission planning?
Translate the commander’s visualization into a COA
What is mission planning?
the art and science of understanding a situation, envisioning a desired future, and determining effective ways to bring that future about.
Planning helps leaders understand situations; develop solutions to problems; direct, coordinate, and synchronize actions; prioritize efforts; and anticipate events.
Planning helps leaders determine how to move from the current state of affairs to a more desirable future state while identifying potential opportunities and threats along the way
Define a Problem Statement
description of the issue or issues that impede the commander from achieving desired end-state
What are common pitfalls of planning?
- Use the plan as a script for execution
- Forecast/dictate things too far out
- Trying to plan in too much detail
- Institutionalizing rigid planning methods
What is Key Terrain?
a specific point or area or locality that once seized or retained provides a marked advantage for friendly or enemy
Define Area of Operation?
the area you will conduct operations, dictated by the JFC/battle space owner
Define Area of Interest
areas the commander is interested/concerned with that can jeopardize the accomplishment of the mission
Define Area of Influence
geographic are that the commander has direct influence over with organic capabilities
Define a Constraint
restriction placed on subordinate by higher that dictates action or inaction, thus restricting freedom of action by a subordinate commander
o ROE
o Comms windows
o AO Boundaries
o NLT/NET times
What is a Specified Task?
tasks directed by higher
What is an Implied Task?
tasks, not directed by higher, that must be accomplished to achieve specified tasks and the overall mission
What is an Essential Task?
the “what” in your mission statement, can have multiple if O/O or BPT (specified or implied to achieve mission)
What is a problem?
issue or obstacle that prevents the commander from achieving desired end-state
Define Course of Action (COA)
a broad potential solution to solve an identified problem
What is an On-Order Mission?
a plan directed to execute that has resources allocated against it and planning has been conducted against it
What is a Be-Prepared-To Mission?
awareness of a potential mission/operation that has no planning or resources allocated (can have multiple units with the same BPT)
