Mission and the Church Flashcards
What are the 3 types of mission
Mission:
for the Church
To the poor
Evangelical mission
History of Evangelism
Early Church- St Puals letters and the disciples spread Christianity throughout the world. Through both word of mouth, direct teaching, and letters. Often converting polytheists.
Evangelism in the 18 and 19th centuries
As colonialism spread, so did Christianity. Major European powers were often very forceful in their conversion, like Spain. In Britian, there were many societies that deemed charitable ones that were trained to speak the language and integrate into these colonies teaching about Christianity.
Modern Evangelism
Can still be conversion centred, but it is more about doing good works for the non christian places visited. Even working secular jobs, but teaching anyone who reqests to know more. Fresh expressions started by the COE is a much more flexible worship, going to parks and pubs instead of the formality of the Church.
The Alpha course
Involved asking non churchgoers to a meal where an informal discussion of faith is also shared.
Mission to the Poor, Church Urban fund
In the 1980s, the Church Urban fund was created by COE. It was to address the considerable poverty in England.
It worked in local communities and funded Youth Groups, and other community based responses to help with financial issues. It tried to address hate and prejudice by supporting community cohesion.
Mission to the poor internationally
CAFOD, and other simmilar originzations are working twoards long term overseas development. Not just short-term simple fixes, they attempt to provide communities with skills and self dependancy.
Mission to the Church
Aka. The Christian community.
Charasmatic Christianity is the only denomination not depleating. They rent out football stadiums and have large healing sessions. During church sessions, there are often donation boxes, and fundraisers for the Church can be held to support their funds.
