Misleading Q's on accuracy of EWT (AO2) Flashcards
Criticise the study in terms of sample
Undergraduate students were used of a minimum level of intelligence and may not be reflective of the accuracy of EWT in the wider population therefore may lack population validity
Why would the use of videos result in demand characteristics?
Ppts may not take the task seriously due to the lack of mundane realism therefore may answer in ways they expect the experimenter wanted. This results in a lack of internal validity therefore not telling us any useful information about the real accuracy of EWT
What research supports this study?
Poole and Lindsay
What did Poole and Lindsay do?
Showed children aged 3-8 a science demonstration and were then told a story that evening with misleading information
What were the findings of Poole and Lindsay’s study?
All children were mislead by the false info but the older children were able to identify where the false information came from whereas the younger children couldn’t.
Why does this support Loftus and Palmers study?
Supports that theres a problem of accuracy in EWT especially in young children
Why does this support Loftus and Palmers study?
Supports that theres a problem of accuracy in EWT especially in young children
However what is a criticism of this study?
May lack internal validity as there was no control over the way the story was read which may have affected recall. Parents may have spent longer saying the story therefore it may not be age affect the accuracy of EWT therefore the research may not be useful
