Asana-
What does sthiram sukham aasanam mean?
The position that is comfortable and steady.
What are asanas made for?
They are created in ways to open and unblock any stagnant energy in the body
- help to steady the mind by working into the body- maintaining the connection between mind & body
What is prana?
- Means vital energy or life force
Out of which 5 major pranas does the pranayama kosha exist?

Describe the first major prana of the pranic body
PRANA
- area between larynx (throat) and top of diaphragm
- respiration and speech
- the force by which the breath is drawn inside
Describe the second major prana of the pranic body
APANA
- below navel to groin
- provides energy for the large intestines: kidneys, anus, genitals
- removes waste from the body
Describe the 3/5 major prana of the pranic body
SAMANA
- between heart&navel
- activate & controls digestive system: liver, intestines, pancreas & stomach and their secretions
Describe the 4/5 major prana of the pranic body
UDANA
- above neck
- activates all sensory receptors: eyes, nose, ears
- need for thought and consciousness of the outside world
- harmonises & activates the limbs, muscles, ligaments, nerves, joints

VYANA
- whole body
- regulates & controls all movements
- co ordinates other pranas
What is a bhanda?
- Bhanda are locks in the body
- locking, holding or tightening action -> intentional muscle contractions
- to redirect energy flow in body
- awaken chakras and rising of kundalini energy
- incorporated in mudras and pranayama techniques

- Jalandhar (throat lock)
- Uddiyana (abdominal contractions)
- Mula bhanda (root lock, perineum contraction)
What is a Mudra?
= gesture or attitude
- psychic, emotional, devotional gestures/attitudes
- creates energy flow linking pranic force w universal or cosmic force
- alter mood, attitude & perception which deepens awareness & concentration
- awakens pranas, chakras & kundalini aiding psychic powers
What is yoga?
- yoga means ‚yoke‘ or join the body and mind
What is vinyasa?
Means to place oneself in a certain way
