Misc Flashcards
What type of drugs are clonidine, gaunabenz, gaunfacine, and methyldopa?
alpha2 agonists
What is reserpine?
a NE storage depletion
What is metyrosine?
a catecholamine storage depletor used to treat pheochromocytoma
What benefits do alpha agonists have over beta blockers?
they can be used in asthmatics and diabetics. Have no reflex tachycardia because of vagal nerve effects. Most can be used in pregnancy (methyldopa)
What are some negative effects of alpha agonists?
somnolence is most common. Dry mouth.
Can an alpha agonist like methyldopa be used in a patient with pheocromocytoma?
no, it interferes with catecholamine quantitation
Are ACE inhibitors and ARBs useful in pregnant women?
NO. they cause birth defects
What is reserpine? What are its major toxicities?
long lasting catecholamine storage depletor. Inhibits VMAT2 (the vesicular transport). Has effects in both peripheral and central.
Can cause concentration problems and suicidal tendencies/depression.
