What can parvovirus cause?
A
- Reticulocytopenia
- Anaemia
- Normal platelets / white cells
Ix:
- IgM active infection - IgG immunity - PCR as well (polymerase chain reaction)

What can cause pancytopenia?
A
- Alcohol
- B12/folate (essential for DNA synthesis)
- Acute leukaemias
- Myelodysplastic syndrome
- Hypersplenism

What haematological effects does alcohol have?
A
- Thrombopoietin from liver is reduced, so platelets reduced
- Iron deficiency - poor diet / variceal bleeding

What bones are main sites of haematopoeisis?
A
- < 25 yo ○ Femur and tibia - 20-70 ○ Vertebrae ○ Pelvis ○ Sternum ○ Rib - BEWARE PAIN IN THESE SITES!

A
<4% blasts in normal
4-20% blasts: myelodysplastic syndrome
>20% blasts: leukaemia

how is neutropenic sepsis treated?
A
Tazocin +/- vancomycin
antifungal
reverse-barrier nursing
