MIS Chapter 5 Content Review Flashcards
What is the CPU/Processor?
The brain of the computer, responsible for executing instructions and performing calculations.
It processes data and controls other hardware components.
What is Clock Speed (GHz)?
Determines how many instructions a processor can execute per second.
A higher clock speed means faster processing but also more power consumption and heat generation.
What is Primary Storage?
Memory that the CPU can access directly for fast processing.
Types include RAM, Registers, and Cache.
What are the types of Primary Storage?
- RAM (Random Access Memory)
- Registers
- Cache
RAM is temporary storage; Registers are ultra-fast storage inside the CPU; Cache stores frequently used data.
What is Secondary Storage?
Used for long-term data storage.
Types include Hard Drives and External Drives.
What are the types of Secondary Storage?
- Hard Drive (HDD/SSD)
- External Drives (USB, SSD, HDD)
Stores the operating system, programs, and files.
What is ROM?
Permanent memory that stores firmware.
Unlike RAM, ROM retains data when the computer is off and cannot be easily modified.
What are Input Devices?
Hardware used to send data to a computer.
Examples include Keyboard, mouse, microphone, scanner.
What are Output Devices?
Hardware that receives and displays information from the computer.
Examples include Monitor, printer, speakers.
What is the protocol for WiFi?
802.11 is the standard protocol for WiFi communication.
WiFi 6 (802.11ax) is the latest version, offering faster speeds and better performance.
What is Ethernet?
The protocol for wired networking, used to connect computers to a LAN.
Generally faster and more reliable than WiFi but requires a cable connection.
When should you spend more money on a computer?
When needing high processing power for gaming, video editing, or working with large datasets.
Investing in a graphics processor, more RAM, and choosing SSD over HDD are examples.
When is it unnecessary to spend extra on a computer?
If only needing it for basic tasks like web browsing or email.
If high-performance features won’t be used, extra spending is not required.
What is a Client Computer?
Used by individuals to request and use services from a server.
Example: A laptop or desktop accessing a website.
What is a Server Computer?
A powerful computer that stores, processes, and delivers data/services to clients.
Example: A web server hosting a company’s website.
