miricals Flashcards
To fully understand the concept of miricals from a philiosphical perspective
what is a mirical
violation of natural law caused by a higher entity
what is the realist view upon miricals
miricals are viewed as real events brought about by the power of god
what is the anti-realist view upon miricals
miricals are not caused by god and instead are interpretations of the mind.
what was Wiles’s view upon miricals
Wiles takes an anti-realist stance, diagreeing with miricals on a moral basis. Wiles thought that the concept of miricals suggested a selelctive god who chooses to help some and not to help others.
One could reference how god did not choose to save the jewish population in the concentration camps.
Wiles beleives that this selective god would not be a god worthy of worship
what was david humes views upon miricals
David Hume takes an empericalist view upon miricals as he argued that we cannot know if an event was caused by a diety if this diety is hidden or not visible.
Hume supports this by pointing out that many different religions all claim to have their own different miricals caused by different gods.
what was swinburns view upon miricals
swinburn created two principles to verify miricals / religious experience
-principle of testemony
with the absence of special conditions we should simply beleive what other people tell us
-principle of redulity
usually how things appear to be is the way that they really are, in the absence of special conditions
what was hollands view upon miricals - include analogy
holland argued an anti- realist approach
analogy to illustate view:
boy nearly hit by train but train stops just before hitting him. The mother of the boy thanks god. However only reason train stopped was due to train driver fainting due to high blood pressure due to other unrelated habits and situations.
so therefore the event was not miraculous it was just interpreted in that way.
