why is meditation important within buddhisum
meditation played a crutial role in the enlightenment of the buddha and is nessesary in order for buddhists to train the mind in order to resist the 3 poisons of the mind (greed, hatred and ignorance)
what is bhavana meditation
Bhavana meditation literally means to develope / cultervate and means to cultivate different aspects of the mind for example loving kindness (metta)
what analogy can link to bhavana meditation
the analogy of the flag - when the mind is developed and focused the flag remains still regardless of external influences however when the mind is distracted the flag becomes impacted by external influences
what is Dhyana (jhana) meditation
Dhyana meditation means training the mind in such a way that it becomes free from all distractions. The buddha experienced dhyana meditation on the night of his enlightenment
what are the different positions in which one can meditate within?
-full lotus
-half lotus
-seated
-kneeling
whatever is the most confortable
what are the three core aspects of meditation within buddhisum
right mindfulness - carefull observation of ones self and their enviroment -helps maintain right inention -generating good karma
right effort - important to sustain meditation for long periods of time
right concentration - helps the mind become free from distractions
what analogy illustrates the importance of having right mindfulness, right effort and right concentration
analogy of the boys and the flower. Three boys playing in a park and notice and flower in a tree. The cannot reach the flower alone and all help each other to reach flower- team work. The three different boys represent mindfulness concentration and effort and how they must work together to reach nirvana.
