Minority Influence Flashcards
Internalisation
With minority influence private and public view is changed
Consistency
Synchronic and diachronic, makes others rethink their own views.
Commitment
Helps gain attention. Through extreme activities (augmentation)
Flexibility
Avoid rigidity, accept reasonable counter arguments.
Snowball effect
Minority overtime becomes majority through conversion.
Synchronic consistency
People in the minority are all saying the same thing
Diachronic consistency
They’ve been saying the same thing for some time.
Augmentation principle
Majority pays even more attention as activities that minority take part in create some risk to them demonstrating commitment to the cause.
Key study: Moscovici et al.
Procedure - 36 blue green slides identified as green consistently or inconsistently.
Finding - consistent minority led to same wrong answer on 8.42% of trials, inconsistency minority led to 1.25%
Research support
consistent minorities are influential (wood et al., meta-analysis
Minorities messages processed more deeply (Martin et al.)
Artificial tasks
Unlike real life so studies lack external validity.
Support for internalisation
Minority more influential when answers written.
Limited application
In real life minority/Majority situation is more complicated, example majorities have status not just more numbers.
