Q

Calcium

A
  • Most abundant mineral in the human body
  • helps form bones and teeth and give them strength
  • calcium comes from bones
  • needed for muscle contractions, including heart contractions, Mg stimulates relaxation
  • help trigger the release of neurotransmitter
  • essential for cell division
  • competes with P and Mg for absorption
  • Vit D increases Ca absorption

Q

Chlorine/ Chloride

A
  • Actually is a poisonous gas, but usually joined with Na (ie. salt)
  • helps generate osmotic pressure of body fluids
  • key component of HCL (stomach acid)
  • helps maintain acid/alkali balance in the body. Kidney excretes NaCl to balance

Q

Magnesium

A
  • “Anti-stress” mineral.
  • Natural tranquilizer that relaxes skeletal muscles as well as smooth muscles in the GI tract
  • essential for proper heart function and prevention os spasms and heart attacks

Q

Phosphorous

A
  • Present in all cell, but 95% in bones and teeth
  • Key mineral in ATP (adenosine triphosphate)
  • component of phospholipids that makes up cell membranes and sphingolipids used in the nervous system
  • supports kidney acid/alkali balance

too much P can affect Ca metabolism leading to calcification of soft tissue and parathyroid hormone imbalance
