Minerals Flashcards
What is a mineral?
A. It is a natural, solid, crystalline inorganic material.
What does crystalline mean?
A: the atoms that form the mineral are arranged in systematic way
What does inorganic mean?
A: inside the material there’s no carbon atoms attached to hydrogen atoms
How do minerals form?
A: they form at different temperatures, pressures and chemical conditions that that exist at different parts of the earth interior and exterior.
What are minerals made of?
A: minerals=molecules=Atoms=3 subatomic particles= Protons Neutrons and electrons
What is a normal atom’s composition?
A: N=P=e
What is the composition of an isotope?
A: N/=P=e
What is the composition of an ion?
A: N=P=/e
What is the mass and charge of a proton?
A: Mass=1 charge=+1
What is the mass and charge of an electron?
A: mass: 0 Charge: -1
What is the mass and charge of a neutron?
A: mass=1 charge=0
What is an atom?
A: the smallest unit a chemical element can be divided.
What is an electron?
A: a particle with a negative charge, and zero mass.
What is a proton?
A: a particle with a positive charge
What is a neutron?
A particle with 0 charge
What is an nucleus?
A: the body that holds neutrons and protons of an atom.
