Basics Concepts Flashcards
Matter
Things that take up space (Energy does not take up space)
Mass
The amount of matter
Volume
The space occupied by matter
Density
Mass/Volume
Gravity
A weak attractive force that exists between two objects
What does gravitational force depend on?
The masses of objects ( when the mass increases, force increases)
The distance between the objects ( as the distance between the masses increases, the force decreases)
Weight
Mass x Gravity
What is Earth’s gravity considered to be?
Earth’s gravity= 1
What is the moon’s gravity considered to be?
It is 1/6 of earths gravity
What is energy?
The ability to do work. ( work= distance x force)
What are the forms of energy?
Potential energy, kinetic energy, Thermal energy, Acoustic energy
What is the Stability?
A state that all systems attempt to attain
What is a system?
A collection of objects
Why do things happen?
Due to the instability of a system
What are systems made of?
They are made up of unstable input of energy
How do systems become stable?
They become stable by changing (=processes)
What is the order of energy?
Energy input-stable system- unstable system- change- stable system
What is the scientific method
It is the sequence of events that is followed to reach scientific conclusions
What is the order of the scientific method?
Observation- question- hypothesis- test( Fails, remains a hypothesis. Passes then becomes a ) theory- (test- fails remains a theory, passes then it becomes a law)
What is a hypothesis?
An explanation to any observation
What is a theory?
A hypothesis that passed one or more tests.
What is a law?
A theory that passed all tests=an undoubted answer to a question
What is latitude?
It is a measurement measured by N and S
What is longitude?
A measurement towards East to West
