Mind brain type identity theory Flashcards
What is the mind brain type identity theory
The mind is the brain, all mental states and processes are identical with brain states and processes
Mental states are ontologically reducible to brain states. Any particular type of mental state is a particular type of brain state
Eg. Thinking a thought is the same as certain neurones firing in the brain
eg. having a belief is same as certain neural connections existing
What is the multiple realisability of mental states argument
Putnam argues mental properties are not identical to physical because the same mental property can relate/supervene on different physical prop
Eg. brain states in relation to pain may differ among different species (eg. human and birds) but still same mental state
if true, there are creatures who have different physical properties from us when in pain (even tho same mental state)
Therefore being in pain isn’t the same thing as having a particular physical property, making MBTI false
