What is a material?
A collection of atoms bonded together.
Can be thought of as balls held together by springs or elastic bands.
Might be useful for understanding the weird things that may happen later on in this course.
What characteristics should a property exhibit?
A property should ideally exhibit a characteristic that is independent of geometry quantity, or other measured properties.
What’s an example of a property that’s dependent upon other properties?
Hardness. It’s dependent upon stiffness and strength both. But it’s easy to measure, so we use it.
What’s the difference between strength and stiffness? (bonus)
Strength is the force a material can withstand. There are different kinds, such as yield and ultimate.
Stiffness is the ratio of elastic deformation to the force applied to the material.
What are the six important empirical property categories?
MT Deteriorative EMO!
Mechanical, Thermal, Deteriorative, electric, magnetic, optical.
What’s a metallic?
ENDED HERE ON SEVEN
A metallic is composed of one or more metallic elements on the periodic table, often with very small amounts of non-metallics.
Large sea of delocalized electrons gives them many of their properties:
What are the six typical properties of metallics?
High strength
High stiffness
High ductility
Resistant to fracture
Thermally and electrically conductive.
What is a ceramic?
A ceramic is a compound of metallics and non-metallics. Typically they’re oxides, nitrides, and carbides.
What are the six typical properties of ceramics?
High strength
High stiffness
Almost no ductility
Low resistance to fracture
Thermally, electrically insulative.
What is a polymer?
Organic compounds.
Typically, they have very large molecular structures.
What are the common properties of a polymer?
Low strength
Low stiffness
Incredibly ductile
Resistant to fracture
Chemically inert
