Aims to:reduce poverty and global hunger
Successfully did: number of people living on $1.25 a day has been reduced from 1.9 billion to 836 million in 2015. this has reduced hunger through increased income
Failed to: 920 million still live below the poverty line
Now improved/followed up by the SDGs by: SDG 1 is to eradicate poverty, while SDG 2 is ‘zero hunger’ as two separate goals (more achievable and more manageable)

MDG 2 is: achieving universal primary education
Aims to: eradicate poverty by educating people
Successfully did: 89% of children undergo full primary education
Failed to: 11% still don’t attend, the issue being far more prevalent amongst girls than boys in LICs and some regions in NEEs
Primary gives a good base, but doe snot give qualifications and many children leave school after 11 to go and work
Now improved/followed up by the SDGs by: quality education is SDG 3

MDG 3 is: better world for all, gender equality
Aims to: reducing poverty and giving equal opportunities for all
Successfully did: women are slowly gaining more political power, with the number of women in parliament incerasing from 11% to 19% from 1995-2010
Failed to: in LICs, only 5-10% of girls go to school!
this is crucial as lack of education often leads to younger pregnancies for women, which limits career etc in LICs as well as HICs
Now improved/followed up by the SDGs by: gender equality is SDG 5

Successfully did: death rates of children under five has fallen by 28% from 1990-2008

Aims to: universal access to HIV and AIDs treatment
Successfully did: tie in with other goals such a gender equality, child mortality and poverty
Failed to: malaria kills a child in the world every 45 seconds
33.4 million people were living with HIV in 2008, 2/3 of which are in Subsaharan Africa

Overall, the MDGs were very ambitious and there has been varied success.
The collaboration and cooperation beteeen different countries had led to a significant improvement in the quality of life of people in most regions of the world
