How did they use their gladius? why?
thrust not cut. the thrust was fatal and a stab was a mere scratch.
what was the scutum made from?
wood glued together and covered with hide. Had to learn to use properly.
Did the pilum have to be thrown a specific way? why?
yes. It was specially made of a wooden shaft and metal tip. If thrown right, the tip would damage the enemy’s shield and make the shaft bent so the enemy could not reuse the pilum.
what 4 items must the milites wear?
- helmet, 2. armor with metal strips (lorica segmentata), 3. the military belt (cingulum), 4. military sandals (caligae). They also wore leggings and a
wool tunic.
How were the caligae unique?
thick soles and iron hobnails to withstand weight and long distances.
What 3 things did the recruited soldier learn in the barracks?
- learned to use the weapons. 2. learn to march long distances. 3. develop strength through swimming, carrying heavy packs, and running.
After the barracks, where did the soldier go for further training and what did they learn?
March with many heavy supplies to the open countryside and learn to set up camps and forts properly.
