Militarism and Alliances Flashcards
What led to the build of the military in various countries?
1) Almost every country was colonizing. To protect their interests overseas, they wanted to have a strong military so they didn’t loose their countries to another power.
2) War became glorified and militarism became desirable to the general population too.
Explain “Glorification of War”. How did this concept get created?
A ROMANTIC NOTION of what war is i.e.
Fighting for your country and a strong feeling of pride was a result of Nationalism. Stories of what war was like was the only thing most people knew about war. These stories were only positive and ideal and promoted glory and heroism so it made people want to join and be a part of it.
How was the military built up/How was militarism accomplished?
Increased percentage of budget spending on the Military by countries was key. In addition, colonization increased the population size and provided an increase in the number of military forces/troops (soldiers).
What was the competition like between countries regarding militarization?
Countries wanted to be superior to their rivals. They wanted better trained troops and better military equipment.
Give an example of the results of this competition regarding military capability between nations.
England had a Navy 2 times the size of other leading countries.
How big was the British Empire compared to Britain itself?
The British Empire was 140x the size of Britain itself.
Why might a strong Navy force be especially important to England?
Since the British Empire was so large, they were always concerned about protecting the entire Empire. A strong Navy would enable them to protect larger areas by blocking any force trying to attack a colony by sea. The Navy protected British Interests.
What was an Alliance?
Treaties between countries to help each other in war.
What was the first alliance?
Bismark
Why were alliances created?
Because if a country created an alliance, they were stronger because the military resources of that country were available to be used as well. It also helped insure that the country that they had an alliance with would support their interests and not attack them. No European country wanted to fight a war by themselves.
Who were the most powerful countries between 1880-1910?
Germany, Austria/Hungary, Italy, France, Russia, and Great Britain
Triple Alliance 1882
Germany + Austria/Hungary + Italy
Triple Entente 1907
France + Russia + Great Britain
Which was a more formal alliance, the Triple Alliance of 1882 or the Triple Entente 1907?
Triple Alliance of 1882 was more formal than the Triple Entente of 1907.
So during the time of 1882-1907, what would happen if two countries were in conflict?
It could cause an entire world war because all of the Major Countries had allies so one conflict involved the whole world.
