milgrim in the 21st century Flashcards
who was milgrim?
interest in holocaust, why do people follow orders when they do harm? how far will people go?
the study - milgrim
mem text, male ppts $4 a day, experimenter wore lab coat, other ppt is not real, teacher is
milgrims procedure
teacher asks learner word pairs, if wrong they got shock from 50-450v, voltage increases each wrong answer
if ppt hesitates they prompt w cues
150v - out i have heart probs
350v - hears nothing
stanford uni
milgrims verbal prompts
please continue, experiment requires u to continue, essential u continue, no choice but to continue
white coat experimenter takes responsibility as legitimate authority figure
milgrims findings
65% have max shock - milgrim predicted 3%
why? - unusual situation, diffusion of responsibility, trust in authority figure
replications of milgrims study
office building - 45%
teacher and learner in same room - 40%
teacher forces hand onto shock plate - 30%
instructions over phone - 23%
2 teachers rebel - 10%
experimental issues of the study
ecological validity, not relevant, does not represent whole pop, can’t generalise, volunteer sample, western culture
HOWEVER - standardised so can be replicated
ethical issues of the study
ppts deceived, no protection from harm, extreme stress, no right to withdraw due to cues
criticisms of the study
edited videos, off script prompts(my responsibility), one ppt was given 26 prompts, told of deception a year later
replication of the study - BURGER
if willing to go to 150v they were willing to go to max
79% to max
fake teacher refused to go on and ppt takes over - 63%
game of death
power of tv, suspend morality
-16/80 backed out
findings - 81% to max, similar to milgrim, producer responsible, prompts similar, 5th prompt - ask the audience - only one ppt continued.
orders vs requests
when prompts are an order we are more likely to disobey
“you have no choice you must carry on” - no one continued.
identification not obedience
engage with the scientific material - more likely to go on because they engage not because told to - prompt 2
