Orders over the phone, initially face to face. Experimenter left the room, teacher was left alone and received further instructions and verbal prods over the phone.

Obedience decreased. 22.5% (9/40). Compared to 65%. They administered the shocks but didn’t increase the voltage. They lied to the experimenter.

In a downtown office block (sparsely furnished) owed by a private research company. Mailshot recruitment. Paid. Same as original study.

Obedience decreased to 47.5% (19/40) compared to 65%. Ppts questioned credentials. One made notes, study was heartless. Showed doubts and asked more questions.

Obedience decreased. Environment matters.

Whether obedience would change if an ordinary man was giving instructions, test role of authority.
What was the procedure? Ordinary man:
Three people instead of 2. Ppt allocated the role of teacher. Rigged draw. Didn’t specify the voltage of shocks. Experimenter got a phone call, gave instructions to continue. The ordinary man said shocks should go up in 15v, instructions by the ordinary man.
What was the result? Ordinary man:
Obedience decreased 20% (8/40).
What was the conclusion? Ordinary man:
Lower levels of obedience, less legitimate.
