Teacher participant administered shock ranging from 15v to 450v- severe shock, at 300v learner pounded against wall and gave no response to next question

‘Absence of response should be treated as a wrong answer’

Findings

No participant below 300v

Five stopped at 300v

65% continued to 450v

Showed extreme tension inc nail biting

Participants were debriefed and 84% were glad to have participated

Evaluation

Good external validity- hofling found levels of obedience of nurses on a hospital ward to unjustified demands by doctors were very high 21 out of 22 nurses obeyed. Can be generalised

Ethical issues

Replications- French documentary 80% gave shocks up to 450v, many showed same behaviour as milgrams e.g. Nail biting. Findings were not a one off
