Aged 20 to 50
Responded to advertisments in local newspapers asking for volunteers for a study of memory at Yale University
Four dollars plus travel expenses
Procedure
Introduced to Mr Wallace
Mr Wallace was learner and participant was always teacher
Teacher given example electric shock of 15 V
Mr Wallace connected to machine in other room
Teacher read sets of word pairs and gave the stimulus word. If a learner made a mistake electric shock was given.
Electric shock increased by 15 V with every mistake
Experimenter used products and prompts to encourage obedience
At 330 V Mr Wallace screamed and begged to be let out
After this he remained silent
Controls
Participant believed Mr Wallace could have been teacher
Same prods and prompts
Mr Wallace made the same mistakes and screamed at the same level of electric shock
Quantitate findings
26/40 administered an electric shock of 450 V that would’ve killed the learner
All participants continue to giving shocks up to 300 V
Qualitative results
