Milgram Flashcards
What was Milgram’s aim?
To explore obedience to authority
Explain AO1 of Milgram
- ad in a newspaper. three roles teacher, learner and experimenter (teacher and learner was randomly allocated but actually rigged that the participant was always the learner, and the learner was a Confederate)
- teacher was told to ask the learner to recall sequences of words and to shock them (not actually but participant believed)if they got it wrong, starting with 15v and going up to 450v
- when the teacher didn’t want to continue the experimenter gave the teacher prods such as “it is essential that you continue”
What did conformity go to when the experimenters orders were given over the phone (proximity)
Less than 20%
Conformity when the study was moved from the lab to a run down office building location)
Less than 47.5%
Conformity when experimenter was called away and replaced with a member of the public (acc a confederate) in ordinary clothing
Less than 20%
Conformity when the teacher is given two buddies who sit with them (confederates) who refuse the experimenter (social support)
Less than 10%
Conformity when the teacher gets paired with someone who they make deliver the shocks instead of them
More than 92.5%
Pros of Milgram’s experiment
- done at YALE university very prestigious and highly controlled environment (validity)
- research support done by burger (2009) got similar results (reliability)
Cons of Milgram’s experiment
- Bad ethics (no informed consent, deceived about aim, they were told the experiment was about how punishment affects memory)
- no ecological validity because the lab setting is artificial
Lacks generalisability because all American white mine, from great new Haven
What is the baseline percent of people who made it all the way to 450
65%
