Q

What was the sample of Milgram’s research?

A

Milgram obtained 40 male participants using self-select sampling via advertisements in newspapers and letters.

They were aged 20-50 with a variety of jobs (highschool teachers, salesmen, engineers, etc).

Had varying levels of education, with one participant not finishing elementary school and others having doctorates.

Each participant was paid $4.50 for coming to the lab, and they could keep the money no matter what happened.

Q

What were the procedures of Milgram’s research?

A
  1. Participants were introduced to another participant called Mr Wallace (a confederate).
  2. Participants drew slips to decide who would be the teacher and who would be the learner. It was rigged so that all the participants would be the teacher and Mr Wallace would be the learner.
  3. The student and learner were taken to a neighbouring room, where the learner was strapped to an ‘electric chair’.
  4. Mr Wallace was told to give three wrong answers for every correct one, and to give set responses whenever the voltage increased , including complaining about his heart.
  5. The teacher was then taken to a joining room containing a ‘shock machine’. The machine had 30 switches, ranging from 15V ‘light shock’ to 450V ‘XXX”.
  6. The ‘experimenter’ acted as the authority figure, and gave the teacher a sample shock to prove that the shock machine was real. The experimenter remained in the same room as the teacher.
  7. The teacher was told to give a shock to the learner whenever he gave a wrong answer, and that he should increase the voltage every time.
  8. Milgram instructed the experimenter to used the following prods when there was any hesitation: “Please continue”, “The experiment requires you to continue”, “It is absolutely essential that you continue”, etc.
  9. After the study, the participants were thoroughly debriefed and reuinted with Mr Wallace.

Q

What was the sixth step in the procedures of Milgram?

A

The ‘experimenter’ acted as the authority figure, and gave the teacher a sample shock to prove that the shock machine was real. The experimenter remained in the same room as the teacher.

15
Q

What was the seventh step in the procedures of Milgram?

A

The teacher was told to give a shock to the learner whenever he gave a wrong answer, and that he should increase the voltage every time.

16
Q

What was the eighth step in the procedures of Milgram?

A

Milgram instructed the experimenter to used the following prods when there was any hesitation: “Please continue”, “The experiment requires you to continue”, “It is absolutely essential that you continue”, etc.

17
Q

What was the ninth step in the procedures of Milgram?

A

After the study, the participants were thoroughly debriefed and reuinted with Mr Wallace.

18
Q

What were the findings of Milgram’s research before the study?

A

Surveyed 14 psychology majors who estimated that 0-3% of participants would administer the full 450V.

19
Q

What were the findings of Milgram’s research after the experiment?

A

26 participants administered the full 450V.

14 participants displayed:
-Nervous laughter and smiling
-Sweating
-Stuttering
-Biting their lip
-Digging their fingers into their flesh

Three participants had seizures.

Concluded that the circumstances the participants found themselves in made it difficult to disobey, such as the money and the experiment taking place at Yale.

20
Q

How many participants administered the full 450V?

A

26

21
Q

What nervous behaviours did the participants display?

A

-Nervous laughter and smiling
-Sweating
-Stuttering
-Biting their lip
-Digging their fingers into their flesh

22
Q

How many participants had seizures?

A

3

23
Q

What did Milgram conclude?

A

The circumstances the participants found themselves in made it difficult to disobey, such as the money and the experiment taking place at Yale.
