Any 4 of: Chinese, Germans, Italians, Irish, Jews, Africans, Indians
How were the Germans treated?
Positive - protestant and well accepted for contribution to economy
Why did Chinese migrate?
Make new life in Britain or been abandoned by employers
How were Jews treated?
Positive up to 1880 - Founded Rothschild Bank to support war against Napoleon
Negative from 1881 - British thought they were taking their jobs and antsemitic attitudes increased.
Why did Africans migrate?
Few taken back by slave owners to live in Britain
How were the Irish treated?
Negative - viewed as lazy, anti-irish racsim increased, British believed they were undercutting their wages and working for less
How were the Indians treated?
Negative - paid lower compared to British soldiers, many left hungry, without pay or warm clothes, and faced discrimination and prejudice
Why did the Germans migrate?
Flee war in Germany and Britain had German king
How were the Chinese viewed?
Exotic, hard-working and caring for family welfare
Why did the Italians migrate?
Fleeing War of Unification and forced conscription
Many also fled because of lost homes and poverty
How were the Italians treated?
Mixed - Some were treated postively as they brought ice cream and music, some married English and had Italian buildings like schools in some cities
Some British blamed them for spread of disease and some hated them for being Catholic
Why did the Jews migrate?
Up to 1880 - restrictions lifted against Jews
After 1881 - Fleeing pogroms in Europe (especially Russia)
What was the impact of Jews like to Britain?
Positive - working class people could now afford to buy brand new clothing
Affordable clothing boosted English economy
What was the impact of Africans like for Britain?
Positive - helped fight in Napoleonic wars (army/navy)
Played key role in abolition of slave trade
Some were political activists
