Name three groups that migrated to England in the Early Modern Period
Any three of: Hansa Merchants, Jews, Gypsies, Hugenots (French protestants), Palatines (German protestants), Africans, Indians
Why did the Hugenots migrate to England?
Fleeing persecution in Catholic France
Why did the Indians migrate to England?
Money and trade
Why did the Gypsies migrate to England?
Fleeing war when Ottoman Turks invaded the Balkans
Why did the Jews migrate to England?
Rabbi ben Israel persuaded Oliver Cromwell to let them back - so they can support England against Catholic Europe
Fleeing religious persecution
How were the Palatines treated?
Initially positive but eventually very negative as people found 1/3 were Catholic and most were unskilled making the effects of the bad harvest in 1709 even worse (13,000 came)
How were the Indians treated?
Mixed - Lascars (sailors) faced racism in England, often called lazy or accused of being criminals
Servants (mostly Ayahs - women servants/nannies) mostly treated well, seen as status symbols
What was the impact of the Jews like on Early Modern England?
Positive - some made significant amount of money
Helped set up/finance Bank of England
What act was passed in 1530 leading to the expulsion of Gypsies?
The Egyptians Act
How were the Hugenots treated?
Very positively - same religion as English, hard working and skilled, financially backed 10% to set up the Bank of England, offered Denization (same rights as English), well-integrated - many married English or Anglicised their names
