Migration Flashcards
What is migration?
Large scale movement of members of a species to a different environment
What can migration be driven by?
Food, environmental factors, reproduction
Some examples of smaller scale migration
Diel vertical migration
Tidal migrations
Splash zone migrations
Wha is diel vertical migration?
Synchronized daily movement of marine organisms up and down the water column. Often happens within the course of one day
Why do whales migrate?
Typically go from food rich polar zones in the summer to warmer zones in the winter for breeding and calving grounds
Why is whale migration important?
The whales bring down nutrients and productivity from the polar zones.
How do birds travel?
They use “flyways” which are basically the major routes of migration that can be influenced by prevailing currents and wind patterns.
How do birds impact environments as they travel?
They affect
- predation
- nutrient inputs
Stopover points are especially important for
Shorebirds
Where do turtles migrate from?
Foraging and nesting areas
Turtles can migrate up to ________ miles or more in a year
10,000
How do turtles navigate?
Not entirely sure. There is evidence that turtles can use geomagnetic imprinting
Geomagnetic imprinting
Imprint on specific conditions of the magnetic field of natal home
