movement of people can be from a rural to an urban area

movement out of country

net immigration = difference between number of immigrants and emigrants

push factors are negative things that makes a person want to leave in terms of
economic = lack of employment opp
political = war
environmental = natural disasters
social= wish to join your family members who live in a different country.

and pull factors are things that want to make you go to a country

what are 2 consequences of impacts or effects of immigration?

  1. ethnically diverse society = britain population use to be predominantly white but now the uk is multi faith ethnic society
  2. younger age structure= more people of working age people who come to the uk tend to be younger and so work contributing to society and economy.

what are 2 effects of globalisation on migration

A
  1. acceleration = increased internal migration - more people are moving from country to country more than even before.
  2. differentiation = has caused different types of migrants. for e.g permanent settlers, temporary workers , students etc. according to vertovec this has created superdiversity whereby migrants are different in terms of there legal status, country of origin and reason for their migration.

migration as political issues

A

assimilation = a gov policy that encourages immigrants to adapt to the norms and values of their host society e.g adapting a full British way of life. 1960s bussing out was apart of this policies.
evaluation = assimilation policies are seen as racist because they assume the immigrants culture inferior to host society.

  1. multiculturalism= is policy that accepts that migrants want to keep some aspects of their own culture so these aspects are accepted by state and wider society
    evaluation= criticised as only accepting shallow diversity such as food whilst rejecting other aspects such as veiling of women.
