what is depression?
A mental disorder characterised by low mood and low energy levels
What are behaviour characteristics of depression?
1) reduce levels of energy - feel lethargic in some cases may suffer from psychomotor agitation - may struggle to relax and end up pacing up and down
2) disruption to sleep and eating behaviour
- may have reduced sleep or increase need for sleep
- may lose their appetite or increase in appetite either weight gain or weight loss
3) aggression or self harm
- may become verbally or physically aggressive or physical aggression directed against self including self harm.
what are emotional characteristics of depression?
lowered mood = feeling lethargic and sad. patients often describe themselves as “worthless and empty”
anger
lowered self esteem
what is cognitive characteristics of depression?
poor concentration = unable to think or find it hard to make decisions.
attending to and dwelling on negative = focuses more on negative aspects then positive
absolutist thinking= when a bad situation happens they see it as a disaster.
