Someone who emigrates for better employment opportunities or to improve their financial position.
What is a irregular migrant
A person who enters a county illegally or remains in a country without a valid visa or permit
What is the rural urban migration case study?
China’s rapid industrialisation began when government reforms allowed foreign investment in Chinese industry.
It is estimated that more than 200 million rural migrants are currently working in china’s cites, with 20 million arriving each year.
Migrants from the country are low skilled. Many find construction work. (China had 40 million construction workers)
Over the next 30 years, up to 400 million more people could move into china’s cities.
What is the EU’s Schengen Agreement (1995)
It ended internal border checks with 26 EU countries. The UK never signed this agreement.
Some critiqued the agreement for making it easy for migrants from outside the EU to travel to high labour demand countries such as Germany.
In 2015 when more than 1 million migrants, mostly Syrian refugees, travelled into the EU through Hungary, temporary border checks was reintroduced.

Half of all international migrants settled in one of 10 counties in 2017 (the USA: 50 million, followed by Saudi Arabia, Germany then Russia.
Around 10% of all international migrants are refugees or asylum seekers. The majority of these reside in low- income countries: 84% in 2017

Changes to the location of where there is demand for workers.
There has been a shift in manufacturing jobs to low wage countries like china. The demand follows the shift.
Rapid industrialisation ha created a high demand for workers, which was met by internal migration: rural-urban migration.
Globalisation enables capital to flow freely around the world.
Globalisation has encouraged international migration.
