What is external migration?
External migration is when a person moves from one land to another
What is internal migration?
Internal migration is when a person moves within the same country
What factors affect the perception of places?
Perceptions vary between people. A few factors can be:
- Age
-lived experience
-income levels
why might people move to another city or to the countryside?
-younger people often move to cities for education such as Newcastle for opportunities
-older people move to the countryside for retirement and peace as they do not need to work anymore.
Case study -
Why is Leicester seen as a good place to live or stay?
Leicester is very diverse with businesses from over 25 countries
- high proportion of students as their are many education opportunities
-has many facilities such as clubs, bars, universities

lived experience is the different experience one person has had throughout their lifetime
Name some negative perceptions of rural places
- higher transport costs
-limited services
-limited shops and supermarkets - negative media reputation
-too remote and takes too long to travel to inner cities
Name some positive perceptions of rural places
-peaceful and calm
-not as much crime
-more nostalgic
- not as noisy
describe the change in land use and give an example.
Different groups, governments and TNC’s may make changes to the land and how its used. This creates both benefits and negatives for the local people.
-It can create jobs and give the people a use, however some may find it difficult due to their lived experiences.
Example- London Docklands
It created many jobs for people which generated them an income, more leisure and services and improved health and education however it came with people which were not happy.
- Some people felt forced out due to gentrification
