Midterm, Physical Dysfunction 2 Flashcards
What are the 3 components of the biomechanical approach?
Strength, ROM, and endurance
What is the difference between strength, ROM, and endurance?
Strength - weights
ROM - flexibility
Endurance - sustaining shit over time
What is the hierarchy of visual perception skills? (think the pyramid, list from bottom to top)
From top to bottom:
Adaptation through vision
Visual Cognition
Visual memory
Pattern recognition
Scanning
Attention = alert and attending
Oculomotor control, visual fields, visual acuity
What are the 2 main goals for OT in acute care?
Prevention - reduce risk of decline or complications
Improve function - ADLs, positioning, mobility
What are two acute care OT treatment options?
Any 2 of the following:
Quick interventions
ADL retraining
Education
Splinting
Exercise
Positioning
Just Right Challenge
What are the four approaches to treatment?
Biomechanical, rehabilitation, cognitive remedial, neurodevelopmental
What is the method used with the biomechanical approach?
Therapeutic exercises
What approach and method in using PROM and stretching for a burn pt?
Biomechanical approach, therapeutic exercise method
What are 3 methods for rehabilitation approach?
Adaptive equipment training, ADL retraining, IADL retraining
Is the rehabilitation approach remediate or compensatory?
COMPENSATORYYY (adaptive)
What approach and method in teaching feeding and eating in a CVA patient?
Rehabilitative approach, ADL retraining method
What are 3 methods for the cognitive remedial approach?
Therapeutic activity, cognitive retraining, visual perception retraining
What is the goal of using biomechanical approach?
Increase ROM, strength, and endurance for ADLs
What is the goal of using the rehabilitation approach?
Compensation for deficits by changing task or environment so pt can do it independently
What is the goal of using the cognitive remedial approach?
Increase cognitive skills so patient is independent with ADLS, improvement in the person’s skills
Give an example of a treatment session using a therapeutic activity method of treatment?
Memory game on the iPad
What are methods used with the neurodevelopmental approach?
Neuromotor retraining, neuromuscular retraining, motor retraining
Think balance, motor control, tone, posture
Is the neurodevelopmental adaptive or remedial?
REMEDIAL :)
What is the goal of using the neurodevelopmental approach in treatment?
Improve neuro deficits in person that the pt can be independent with ADLs
What is the difference between reality orientation and remotivational?
Reality orientation helps patients by regularly reminding them of the current time, place, and person to reduce confusion. Remotivational therapy engages patients in activities and discussions to encourage interest.
What are cognitive areas to treat?
Level of Arousal
Attention
Orientation
Memory
Sequencing
Executive Function including problem-
solving
What is Broca’s aphasia?
Language expression
What is Wernike’s aphasia?
Language comprehension
Difference between right and left brain disorder?
Right Brain Disorder: Primarily affects visual-spatial skills, attention, emotional and social understanding, and awareness of deficits.
Left Brain Disorder: Mainly impacts language abilities, analytical and logical processing, and verbal memory.
What are the ranchos levels?
Level 1: No Response
Level 2: Generalized Response
Level 3: Localized Response
Level 4: Confused/Agitated
Level 5: Confused, Inappropriate Non-Agitated
Level 6: Confused, Appropriate
Level 7: Automatic, Appropriate
Level 8: Purposeful, Appropriate
Level 9: Purposeful, Appropriate (Stand-By Assistance on Request)
Level 10: Purposeful, Appropriate (Modified Independent)
What are the five components of the multicontext approach?
- Processing Strategies
- Task Analysis and established criteria
for transfer
3.Use of multiple environments - Relation of new knowledge to
previously learned knowledge or skills - Metacognitive training
