Q

What are the 4 criteria for VO2 max achievement?

A
  • Volitional Exhaustion
  • Peak RER greater than 1.1
  • Peak & Plateau of VO2 (no change greater than 100ml)
  • Age predicted or known HR max is reached

Q

Is VO2 better at measuring between people or between groups?

A

Between groups, for instance between Tennis players and Hockey players, rather than just between hockey players.

Q

What is the difference between Absolute and Relative VO2?

A

Absolute: L/Min -> for non weight bearing sports such as cycling, swimming
Relative: ml/kg/min -> for weight bearing sports such as running, skiing etc

Q

If specificity is so important why do we not just train for our event?

A

Because adaptation does not come without overload, one needs to balance between specificity and overload in order to maximize training adaptations.

Q

Describe LSD training (6)

A
  • Low to moderate intensity (50-70% VO2)
  • 70% of HR max
  • 75-80% of AT intensity
  • 15-20 ppm below HR @ threshold
  • 70-75% of race pace for endurance athletes
  • Long duration (45min+)

Q

Purpose of LSD training?

A
  • Extend distance
  • extend endurance time
  • improve efficiency
  • recover from hard training
  • Physiological effects: enhance fat utilization, caloric expenditure, build muscle endurance
