Stages of Change Questionnaire (SOC-Q)

A

The Stages of Change Questionnaire can be helpful in identifying a client’s stage of motivational readiness for change, which will inform the qualified exercise professional in deciding appropriate strategies for enhancing the commitment to change.

Q

General Procedures for all Aerobic Assessments

A

Explain purpose and general procedure of aerobic assessment protocol to client

Familiarize client to ergometer

Calculate 85%Hrmax (and 50-70%HRmax for the Treadmill Test)

Warm-up (if applicable)

Monitor and record HR every minute

Monitor RPE every stage during exercise

Monitor client symptoms for intolerance to exercise throughout

Terminate test and immediately move to post-exercise recovery protocol

Q

Aerobic test will end;

A
  • Reaches the ceiling heart rate (85% of 220-age)
  • Asks to stop
  • Shows signs of physiological distress (e.g., begins to stagger, complain of dizziness, extreme leg pain, nausea, chest pain, or show facial pallor).
  • Cannot maintain the cadence (for the mCAFT and Cycle Ergometer tests)
  • Completes Stage 8 (for the mCAFT)

Q

Post-Exercise Recovery Procedures

A
  1. Active recovery for 3 minutes immediately following termination of aerobic protocol
    • Duration/intensity can be selected by client but should be <1st workload
    • Record HR every 1 min
    • If client wants more active recovery, then extend by 2 minutes
  2. After active recovery, client can be seated for passive recovery
    • Continue to record HR every 1 min
    • Measure BP at 1 and 3 minutes of passive recovery
  3. At 3 min of passive recovery, HR & BP should be below screening cutoffs
    • If both HR & BP are below screening cutoffs, then proceed to MSK tests
    • If HR or BP still above screening cutoffs, then give another 2 min rest, then re-measure HR
    & BP.

Treadmill Walking Test Formula

A

Estimated VO2max (ml⋅kg-1⋅min-1) =

  1. 1 + (21.8 x speed mph) – (0.327 x SSHR bpm) – (0.263 x speed mph x age) +
    (0. 00504 x SSHR bpm x age) + (5.98 for males)

Q

Cycle Ergometer Test Formulas

A

SM, VO2 = [(Workload in Watts / Weight in kg) x 10.8] + 7.0

Slope (b) = (SM2-SM1) / (HR2 – HR1)

Estimated VO2max (ml⋅kg-1⋅min-1) = SM2 + [b x (HRmax - HR2)]

  • SM1=Sub-maximal VO2 at 2nd last workload
  • SM2= Sub-maximal VO2 at last workload
  • HR1=Average of last 2 heartrates from the 2nd last workload
  • HR2=Average of last 2 heartrates from the last workload
