Midterm Lab: Muscle and Nervous Tissues Flashcards
What are the two types of movement?
Voluntary and involuntary
Which muscles move voluntarily?
Skeletal
Which muscles move involuntarily?
Cardiac muscle, smooth muscle
Where can skeletal muscle be found in the body?
Attached to bones
What are items to identify in the skeletal muscle (teased and whole) slide?
Straight, cylindrical cells
Striations
Several small nuclei (cells are multinucleated)
Where can cardiac muscle be found in the body?
Myocardium of heart
What are items to identify in the cardiac muscle?
Short, branched cells
Striations
Large nucleus (cells are mononucleated)
Intercalated discs (which joins cells end-to-end)
Where can smooth muscle be found in the body?
Organ walls: Stomach Intestines Uterus Urinary bladder
What are items to identify in the smooth muscle slide?
Short, slender cells with no striations
Nucleus (cells are mononucleated)
Involuntary control
What are the two types of cuts to examine muscle tissue?
Cross section and longitudinal section
What are striations?
Faint lines running perpendicular to the muscle.
What are intercalated discs?
Discs that attach muscle ends to end.
What are the two types of nervous tissue?
Neurons and neuroglia
Where can a neuron smear be located in the body?
Brain
Spinal Cord
What are items to identify in the neuron smear?
Neurons (conduct nerve impulses)
Axons and dendrites (if given a direction)
Neuroglial cells (neuroglia; supportive cells)
Where can nerves cells be found?
Nerves
What are items to identify in the nerves?
Fascicles
Perineurium
How can you tell the difference between and an axon and a dendrite?
Axons are thicker, transmitting impulses away from the body.
Dendrites are very thin and faint, transmitting impulses toward the cell body.
What are the smaller dot like structures on the neuron smear?
Neuroglia
What is the largest structure with a nucleus inside?
The Neuron cell body
In a nerve cross section slide, what are the dark pinkish circular structures?
Fascicles
In a nerve cross section slide, what are the light colored borders surrounding the fascicles?
The perineurium
In a nerve cross section slide, what are the solid white circular structures?
Blood vessels
In a nerve longitudinal section, what are the pinkish thick stripes?
Fascicles
In a nerve longitudinal section, what are the outer edges of the fascicles?
Perineurium
What are considered the supportive cells of the neuron?
Neuroglia
What are the functions of neurons?
Conduct nerve impulses
