system of government where a single person has the total authority ex n. Korea
Bureaucracy
system of government where important decisions are made my state officials rather than elected representatives. ex the staff that runs city hall

Charter of Rights and Freedoms
- Guarantees fundamental freedoms, legal rights and equality rights
Canada able to amend it’s own constitution. Charter stands above all law in Canada

methods taken to reduce crime in a society
Democracy
a system of government where the population elects representatives, who make the laws and rules for the rest of society/
Due Process
Fair treatment through the normal judicial system
Duty of care
responsibility for media to report accurately, not sensationally. ex treating victims well
Executive
AKA government. The management and governing of a country (PM, Cabinet and the federal departments they manage
constitutional democracy
authority of the majority is limited by legal and institutional means.. so that the rights of individual minorities are respected
Judiciary
series of independent courts
Interpret laws of the other two branches (prov and fed)
Legislature
law making branch of government (senate, HOC)
Mass Media
a means of communication that has the ability to reach large groups of people
Monarchy
Seeing a King or Queen as the head of state. Canada = constitutional monarchy
Moral Panic
A feeling of widespread fear among a large group of people that something evil threatens the well-being of society
Oligarchy
small economically influential group of people. ex rich people making all the decisions for the larger group, even though they make up very few of them
Parliamentary Government
Legislative, law making., part of the government. (Monarch, senate, HOC)
political socialization
the process in which people acquire their political attitudes, beliefs opinions and behaviors. creates personal view on how governments and judicial system should work
Public Opinion
the desires, wants and thinking of the majority of people in a group
Public Opinion Poll
done in an effort to understand what the majority wants. It doesn’t reliably reflect the needs and wants of everyone
